City-Hotline
Many towns and cities are facing major challenges:
- Trade is always associated with change. The effects of change are sometimes positive but frequently also undesirable - such as the demise of small and medium-sized businesses, the trend towards "monocultures" in the retail sector, and the ever-increasing structural problems in many areas.
- Structural change and the privatisation of previously state-run companies have a tendency to leave behind what can only be called "wasteland landscapes" at the heart of towns and cities, and entire city districts need to be redesigned and redeveloped.
- Competition between towns and cities is increasing all the time, and many locations are not adequately equipped to face the new challenges. Some of them are at risk of losing their status as regional centres.
- Moreover, the big shopping complexes, fashion chains and discounter on out-of-town greenfield sites are drawing more and more purchasing power away from the city centre; the inner city retail trade often lacks the vitality and the facilities (suitable premises, adequate parking space etc.) to counteract this trend.
In locations as different as Augsburg (the site of the old calico factory) and Berlin (Potsdamer Platz square), ECE has completely redeveloped entire city quarters, thus making a major contribution to enhancing and restoring the status of many city centres throughout Germany.
