FRANKEN-CENTER, НЮ́РНБЕРГ
The beginning of the shopping center era
40 years ago, the ECE opened its first shopping center: Franken-Center in Nuremberg
It was the day that marked the birth of the modern ECE center: on October 23, 1969, the young property company headed by Werner Otto opened the Franken-Center in Nuremberg. This fall the center will be celebrating its 40th anniversary.
The shopping center - which originally bore the name "Franken-Zentrum" - was built at the end of the 1960s in the suburb called Langwasser, a fast-growing satellite town in southern Nuremberg.
This was the first time that the shops were arranged in a covered, air-conditioned mall. Each of the 40 retailers had their own shop entrance as well as an individually designed shop front and conducted business under its own name. When drawing up the rent structure, ECE took account of branch, size of shop, and location within the center. This concept was a total success: thanks to the comprehensive range of goods and products, the pleasant atmosphere, and easy accessibility, the Franken-Center soon became a focal point of attraction for the region - with the result that ECE extendet the sales area from 14,000 m² to 30,000 m² in 1979. The center was extended once again and completely modernized in the period from 1991 to 1993.
Generously dimensioned light domes were fitted, along with a high-quality floor covering and a new lighting system. Measures like these have ensured that the center has always developed dynamically and remained attractive. Today, around 110 shops on three levels over a total sales area of more than 40,000 m² invite visitors to shop in the center.
